Sensory Analysis

This Siebel Institute of Technology Sensory Analysis training is conducted for the first time in South Africa by The Brewsters Craft Team. During this training, we cover over 15 on/off flavours and taints commonly found in beer

Why am I doing this?
This one day training is intended for a person who is currently in charge of ensuring good quality beers are produced, distributed and sold to consumers. This individual needs to understand the impact of bad quality beer with off-flavours  on brand integrity and consumer loyalty.

At the end of this training, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Science of Sensory Analysis
  • Typical on/off flavours commonly found in beer, how they are produced or introduced and how they could be controlled or eliminated
  • Descriptors used by brewers across the globe for these on/off flavour

Microbrewery Start-up

This 4-day course aims to highlight the requirements of starting and running a sustainable microbrewery in South Africa

Why am I doing this?
You may be a home brewer hoping to turn your passion into a living or you may just be someone tired of the rat-race and wanting to try your luck out at microbrewing, then this is the ideal course for you.

At the end of this training, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Legal requirements
  • Basic labour laws
  • Sourcing brewing equipment and suppliers
  • Sales and distribution

Introduction to Brewing Science

During this training, you get to spend a full brewing day with the Brewster observing and learning all her brewing secrets. You will both cover the theory and practical of basic brewing science.

Why am I doing this?
This one day training is intended for a person who is currently a homebrewer or is in the process of moving into full-grain and is interested in advancing their knowledge and understanding of brewing. It is equally intended for an individual setting-out to start commercial brewing or is currently working at a microbrewery but wants to expand on their knowledge  and practical skill. 

At the end of this training, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Overview of the brewing process and understanding of the basic brewing science
  • Key quality checks and process monitoring conducted during the brewing process
  • Good manufacturing practices in a micro or home brewing setup
  • Fundamental principles in making good quality beers

Basics of Brewing

Team building/ Group Session

The course is designed to give participants foundational theory and practical of the beer production process, with emphasis on the different beer styles.

The participants will be taken through the history of brewing in South Africa and also get to taste some of the beers styles currently available in South Africa through a guided, fun and interactive tasting session

Interesting facts on what makes a good quality beer and other general important information one needs to know to make them the “coolest beer drinker” will also be covered.

The candidates will also get to participate in a practical brewing session ( 20L system), get advise on the kits and raw materials available to use as they start their journey in the wonderful world of home-brewing

As a  brewing novice or a beer-ginner, you will definitely  find this course educational yet fun and interesting.
